About Barwon Bluff
At this pincer-shaped reef where the Barwon River meets Bass Strait, the intertidal zone is rich with limpets, whelks, barnacles, mussels and tube worms, while kelp-covered subtidal reef supports a varied fish community including western blue groper, horseshoe and six-spined leatherjackets, magpie perch, boarfish, Port Jackson sharks and smooth stingrays. Between the reef pincers, giant kelp forms a small forest frequented by colourful sea slugs, and giant rays are regularly seen sweeping across the sandy floor, with offshore bommies fringed by bull kelp sheltering sponges beneath.
