About Mushroom Reef

Weathered basalt forms a mosaic of rock pools, crevices and shallow reef where crabs, cushion sea stars, snails and anemones shelter. Brown algae and seagrass provide habitat for morwong, wrasse, cowfish and weedy seadragons, with ascidians, sea fans, sponges and crayfish occupying rocky crevices; surge can occur even when the surface looks calm.

Access — entry & exit

It's a short walk from the car park via a short sandy track and stairs close to the main reef platform. At low tide the distinctive mushroom-shaped intertidal area is exposed, providing easy access from the beach to the platform and the offshore reefs. Entry via shore. The intertidal reefs can be snorkelled at high tide.
